04. notes

England Your England is a collection of stories offering an alternative look at life in modern day Britain. What started as a single short film in 2013 has developed into a decade long series capturing personal stories from a range of characters from all walks of life.

05. afoti

Five years ago, Douglas McMaster opened the restaurant Silo, hoping to change the unsustainable practices of modern food systems. His aim was simple, yet frighteningly ambitious: create an award winning menu using a zero-waste food system designed from scratch. This is the story of that restaurant’s first five years.

06. richard

The film Richard is a portrait of wandering piano tuner Richard Roberts while he explores the adventures of living without a fixed address. He classes himself as working homeless, a growing group who sleep rough by night, but then get up in the morning to go to work. Richard sees his lifestyle choice as an experiment of economics, convenience and environmental impact.

07. abwdim

A Bright Warm Day in May is a visual journey through the final days of lockdown as told by those who live on the fringes of Brighton. Conducted in the style of a photoessay, capturing single static frames while engaging in conversation, the journey and collection of characters takes an uniquely organic flow.

08. visions

Visions of Albion is an observational exploration into how we present ourselves as a nation to visiting guests. Following a group of Chinese visitors, we view Britain from their perspective, discovering the sights, culture and history that defines Britishness in the minds of international tourists. Shot over a five-day tour between London and Edinburgh, the film was my first departure in style from the existing series, indulging an observational shooting style as we discover Britain from an alternative viewpoint.

09. mark

Tottenham-born Mark burgled his first house at 11, and his life quickly spiralled into a life of drugs, guns and robbery. After two prison sentences, he decided to turn his life around and joined the charity User Voice, formed by fellow ex-offenders. Its mission is to deliver a unique insight into the criminal justice system and bring about necessary reform. Shot on Tottenham’s Broadwater Farm Estate as well as central London, the film portrays a man who’s dark past presents a unique ability to influence and engage with those on the outskirts of society.

10. pete

Pete explores ideas of space, time and social freedom, focussing on his experiences of squatting in empty commercial properties throughout the UK. As a self employed poet and performing artist living on a low wage, Pete represents a growing group of our society who are having to find DIY solutions to live and thrive in our cities. Shot in and round multiple London squats, as well as the now empty Olympic Park, the film asks important questions about the illusionary housing crisis and the link between the mass privatisation of space and the lack of affordable housing in the UK.

11. robert

The film Robert (K) is a portrait of East London based artist and musician Clapton Fox. Captured over two years, the film catalogues his creative journey while discovering what inspires his leftfield brand of art. Shot in and around his Hackney studio, as well as on location in Morocco, we embrace the excitement and energy of a life spent fulfilling creative dreams.
